On Sunday, the 4th of June, 2017, telecoms exec and first time author Joseph Ogbuka launched his poetry book titled ‘Deep’. The launch which held at the famous Ultima Sudios in Lekki, Lagos, was anything but run-of-the-mill; In fact, as one website put it, guests trickled into Ultima Studios in Lekki, Lagos, expecting a regular book launch with speeches and long readings, but were pleasantly surprised as they took their seats, lights went out and the action began.
The launch kicked off with the brief screening of a short clip showing interpretations of the word ‘Deep’ by different people. The author then went on to recite one of his poems, after which his 2 really young but smart daughters, 9year old and 10 year old Olachi and Kachi read two poems ‘#Occupy Nigeria’ and ‘Life’ from his book.
Then came the juicy part of the event; a 7man stage production to bring the book to life! Gbayichild Entertainment was a key part of the production, as it was directed by its CEO, Lydia Idakula Shobogun, and managed by its Creative Director, Blessing Bee Azubike. The production which included a projection of selected poems from the book through dance, music and acting was a Thespian Muse production and was produced by its CEO and Chief Impersonator, Omoye Uzamere. Make-up guru Gift Okpa of Proteus Vanity, in addition to handling make-up and costume, doubled as production assistant. Did we mention that the production was juicy? Well, we aren’t the only ones who think so as it ended to rousing applause and cheers while The Nation called it “A major highlight of the event”. The 7 man cast included Austine Onuoha, Funmilayo Abe, Tosin Adeyemi, Tolulope Aina, Zaynab Balogun, and 2 super-talented musicians – Guitarist/Singer Tosin Oguntayo and Internationally acclaimed drummer/percussionist Wura Samba.Nothing compares to live experiences, but photos try to retell stories as explicitly as possible, so here goes!
